Learn how to treat constipation from gastroenterologist Lisa Ganjhu, M.D. in this Howcast video about stomach problems and digestive disorders.
So if you suffer from constipation there's a couple ways of treating it. The most important way is changing your diet. If you can get more fruits and vegetables in your day you're probably going to help with your constipation. Your goal is really 25 to 30 grams of fiber a day. And you could do that by taking whole grains, fruits and vegetables, you can even take a fiber supplement such as Metamucil or Citrucel. The next thing is increasing your water intake. You want about 6 to 8 glasses of water a day. By doing that you're going to hydrate your body, and hydrate your colon, hydrate the stool so you don't get constipated. The next thing to do is really get some exercise in there. You want 30 to 40 minutes a day about 3 to 4 times a week. And what that does is that improves your general well being, helps to get you moving, and helps to get your digestive track movement. So if you put all those three in place it's going to help you with your constipation.
