Learn what causes constipation from gastroenterologist Lisa Ganjhu, M.D. in this Howcast video about stomach problems and digestive disorders.

Constipation is defined by having less than three bowel movements a week. So if you have constipation there’s a couple reasons why. The most common cause to having constipation is not enough fiber in your diet, or a poor-fiber diet. The next is not drinking enough water. And after that would be exercise, and not doing enough exercise. So if you really need to work on your constipation, and trying to get it fixed, you really need to increase your fiber intake. More whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Need to drink more water. We try to get in six to eight glasses a day. And get to exercising. You want to really get three or four times a week, for about 30 to 40 minutes each time. So if you get moving, get drinking, and change your diet, your constipation will get better.
