NOTE: I won’t be talking about the OTC that you buy at the pharmacy because most of those pharmaceuticals are filled with other bad stuff and they are not worth your time or money.

I’ll only focus here on the top 5 natural remedies:

Cascara Sagrada – this is a purgative herb, probably the gentlest of this class. Also known as “sacred bark” from a native American tree. A lot of herbalists claim that in addition to its laxative quality it also tones the intestinal tract and colon. It can be purchased in over- the-counter preparations or taken as a tincture (1/2 teaspoon at bed).

This is what I take after a long airplane trip or if for some reason I’m highly dehydrated and cannot got for more than a day. But like ay purgative herb, it irritates and it shouldn’t be used more than 2-3 days.

Psyllium Husk – It’s known as a bulk laxative. They create bulk and gently push that bulk through your intestine without laxative effects. This is one of the main ingredients in Metamucil. A combination of psyllium seeds and a large glass of water can help lubricate the bowels and help you pass dry stools. And it is good to help cut cholesterol down.

Slippery elm is a soothing herb that will help lubricate the intestinal tract, helping you relieve constipation. It is healing and nourishing and is also great if you suffer from any other digestive complaints such as IBS or stomach cramps.

Senna – A very common and popular purgative herb. It is included in a lot of the OTC remedies in pharmacy. It will make you poo but it is strong and irritant since it forces the bowel to move. I

don’t use it for this very reason. The packages always say that Pregnant or nursing mothers should not use these irritants, nor should people with gastrointestinal problems including ulcers, ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, and hemorrhoids.

Rhubarb Root – Another popular purgative root. Dr. Andrew Weil, the well-known physician/author and lecturer, says “If you must use an irritant laxative, try rhubarb root (Rheum officinale). It is one of the safest and least violent, but it should be reserved for occasional use only. You can get preparations of rhubarb root in health food stores.

So tell me, have you tried any of these? Which one has been most effective? Let me know by leaving a comment below and let’s start a conversation.

first used it it worked within 15 minutes. she recommend this because I had
a fecal body odor. as time passed i started having very bad cramps and no
poop would come out. i read that you could die from taking senna. i plan on
doing a full body detox but I worry because senna and my body don’t work.
